We invite you to join the 115th Kaizen Tour in Japan with a special focus on applying Toyota Way principles to healthcare management and delivery. We will learn from Toyota and one other leading manufacturer in order to gain an image of a mature Lean management system. This Kaizen Tour brings together examples from services industries including restaurants and hotels to grasp how kaizen and Lean principles can become part of a culture of quality and customer service. We will visit two hospitals to see concrete application of lean healthcare. We will have Japanese sensei as guest speakers to provide deep insight from their many decades of practice. The Kaizen Institute tour facilitator will be joined by lean healthcare author, speaker and consultant Mark Graban. Each day and every detail of this healthcare-themed Kaizen Tour will enlighten and motivate you to advance along the Lean journey more effectively.

The day ends with discussion and learning facilitated by our consultants. A retired Toyota executive will join us as guest speaker and for Q&A.

Brad Schmidt is Chief Operating Officer of Kaizen Institute and partner responsible for Japan operations. As a global consultant and trainer, Brad specializes in kaizen and the Toyota Production System in non-production environments. He specializes in creating Lean programs that take into account the uniqueness of that industry, as well as making them as "waste-free" as possible, yet logically coherent. Brad is also passionate about making Kaizen Kaikaku Tour a journey that is full of joy and fun for the participants. Brad has led over 100 Kaizen trips and delivered Lean training and coaching to hundreds of people in dozens of countries. He was born and raised in Japan and is fluently bilingual.

Mark Graban is a leading author, keynote speaker and consultant in the field of lean healthcare. His groundbreaking book Lean Hospitals: Improving Quality, Patient Safety, and Employee Engagement was selected for a 2009 Shingo Research and Professional Publication Award and is being translated into seven languages. His second book Healthcare Kaizen (2012) describes in practical detail how hospitals are using the power of engaged people to continuously improve safety, quality and cost within hospitals worldwide. In addition, Mark is a popular blogger and he hosts a podcast series in which he interviews a "who's who" of lean thinkers, authors and practitioners. Mark is also the Chief Improvement Officer for KaiNexus, a technology company that enables hospitals to capture and share improvement ideas, making improvement easier. Mark earned a BS in Industrial Engineering from Northwestern University as well as an MS in Mechanical Engineering and an MBA from the MIT Sloan Leaders for Global Operations Program.
